American College of Cosmetic Physicians- Choosing a Cosmetic Physician

How to Choose a Cosmetic Physician

Once you have made up your mind to have a cosmetic procedure you owe it to yourself to find the best cosmetic physician possible. Make sure you have realistic expectations about your cosmetic procedure and what it will accomplish.

  1. Look for a doctor with the right credentials. Ask the doctor what kind of group affiiiations he has related to your procedure.

  2. Look for a doctor who specializes in the type of procedure you are having done. Ask how often the doctor does this type of procedure. Ask what type of continuing education the doctor has pursued in this area.

  3. Look for a doctor who takes the time to talk with you about your expectations for the procedure. Look for a doctor who explains the procedure, including potential risks for your procedure and what will be done to minimize those risks. The doctor should also explain what the recovery time will be for your procedure.

  4. Ask the doctor to show you before and after pictures of his patients.

  5. Get quotes from several doctors. If one doctor's price is much lower than the others, be suspicious.

  6. Take the time to look at the doctor's facility. The facility should give you a feeling of confidence. It should be clean and modern looking.

  7. Evaluate your consultation experience. Listen to your "gut" when you are evaluating your consultation experience. If the experience is organized and enjoyable, the staff is efficient and respectful, and the doctor takes the time to understand your individual needs and communicates effectively, then you have a high likelihood of being treated the same way when you become a patient.
