The American College of Cosmetic Physicians and the American Board of Cosmetic Medicine are not currently accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) nor the House of Delegates of The American Medical Association. However, it is the intent of the ACCP to petition for approval from the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association, and to seek recognition of the ABCM by the ABMS through the Liaison Committee for Specialty Boards. As yet, there are no university affiliated residency training programs in "Cosmetic Medicine", and therefore, the status of certification by the American Board of Cosmetic Medicine is not yet recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). However it is the intent of ABCM to develop, in time, university affiliation and a university affiliated residency program(s) in cosmetic medicine. In addition. the ABCM is a distinct entity from the American College of Surgeons (ACS), its affiliates, and the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. A diplomate with certification from the American Board of Cosmetic Medicine, therefore is not entitled to designate him/herself as a "plastic surgeon" or "cosmetic surgeon" unless the physician has also fulfilled the requirements of that board. Diplomats certified by the American College of Cosmetic Medicine, however, are sanctioned by the ABCM to be self-designated as a "Cosmetic Physician" or, a "Cosmetic Medicine Specialist" as long as such designation is in compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations.
