Success of Smartlipo and Tumescent Liposuction
(Liposculpture) for the Abdomen

Most patients have subcutaneous fat that can be removed by liposuction and are happy with the results of Smartlipo and Tumescent Liposuction (Liposculpture). Intestinal fat cannot be removed by liposuction because it would be too dangerous. Fat on the intestines can only be diminished by weight loss through diet and exercise. Since most patients have more subcutaneous fat than intestinal fat they will see a good cosmetic improvement with abdominal Liposculpture. The goal is not to remove as much fat as possible, but rather to produce a result that is a cosmetic improvement and appears natural.

Since Smartlipo and Tumescent Liposuction ( Liposculpture ) are performed using local anesthesia the risks and complications involved with general anesthesia are eliminated. Patients will be able to go home the same day as the procedure but should have someone else do the driving. Patients do not typically need any pain medication immediately after abdominal liposuction because the tumescent local anesthesia lasts for up to 18 hours. From 36 to 72 hours after surgery, patients experience the greatest degree of soreness and discomfort and prescription pain medicine is usually required for one to two days afterward. However, the discomfort resolves quickly. Walking at a mild to moderate pace is highly recommended the first few days after the procedure; however, strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 7 to 10 days. The patient should shower at least once or twice daily beginning 24 hours after the procedure.

No sutures are required as the tiny incisions close on their own within a day or two. A special support garment will continue shaping your body for the next one to three months. During the first two weeks, the garment reduces the risk of complications such as a hematoma or seroma. Although wearing the garment for longer than two weeks is not an absolute requirement, in general, one can expect slightly better results if its worn for a longer time; if tolerated, up to three months is helpful. Although there will be a reduction in fatty bulges immediately following Smartlipo and Tumescent Liposuction, it will take two to four months for swelling to completely disappear and reveal the new body.

For most of our patients, liposculpture scars are very small and barely visible. The scars will appear as red or pink for six months and gradually fade. These scars are normally not a problem but patients should be aware that cosmetic plastic surgery scars are permanent and the size and the final color will depend on factors that are not totally predictable.
